Every family is different, some are close, some are not, some talk all the time, others never talk. However, when it comes to switching to a vegan lifestyle, most people have something to say. Whether you chose to be vegan for the animals, better health, medical reasons, or just lost interest in meat, someone is going to have an opinion on your personal life choice. Many people when making such a big decision, tend to share it with their best friend or family first, the people closest to you.
This exchange can go in many different directions depending on who you are telling. If its your spouse, there may be an adverse reaction or resistance, especially if they love meat and are not willing to give it up. If its your parents who have eaten meats all their lives, this may seem very radical to them. If it is your best friend, they may think you are crazy or really don’t care because it does not affects their food in anyway. It may be your doctor or another concerned friend who wanders where you get your protein from. Either way its your life and as long as you are buying you own food and taking care of your own health, what anyone else thinks of it is irrelevant. But you don’t want to end relationships over this either, I mean it’s just food for peats sake!!
So let them express their views, they have that right, what they don’t have the right to do is impose them on you. Likewise, your views on vegan should not be pushed on them. There may be changes when going out to eat like picking restaurants that have vegan and/or vegetarian options. It may mean bringing a dish to someone else’s house for dinner so they don’t have to cook a vegan dish or making it a pot luck so everyone has something they like. As far as what you eat is up to you, they don’t have to eat it, they don’t even have to look at you eating the food.
When it comes to vegan you may go against the family, but you don’t have to push them away, not over food for peats sake!!
